Despite my brother's protestations that I just regurgitate Republican talking points (like I am incapable of coming up with my own logic that just happens to be similar to others)...I will again reiterate my warning to all...HOLD ON TO YOUR WALLETS!!
He will come after you too!

There was and is an obvious economic disparity between white and black in this country. Obama seems to be addressing why this didn't get fixed by the courts during the civil rights era. He addresses why monetary disparity is difficult for the courts to address.
I believe that affirmative action was a legislative step that attempted to address the disparity that existed in as fair a way as possible. Are all people who believe in the premise of affirmative action, socialists? Is it redistribution of wealth? I guess it could be seen as that, but I like to think of it as an attempt to right a wrong. Was it good? Well, like all attempts to fix unfairness in the system it was sometimes misplaced, but it was necessary. The unfortunate thing is that even with the legislation that gave (gives) black people a chance, disparity in wages still occurs. Would a mandate from another branch of government make it go away? I don't know, but it seems wrong that 143 years after the end of the Civil War black people as a group are valued less than white people as a group. We should be talking about how to right this wrong and while we're at it, let's discuss the wage disparity between men and women.
I think the Ledbetter v Goodyear decision is a very interesting case and it's a shame that the court found for Goodyear. (The following is from wikipedia- emphasis is mine) "Justice Ginsburg dissented from the opinion of the Court,[4] joined by Justices Stevens, Souter, and Breyer. She argued against applying the 180-day limit to pay discrimination, because discrimination often occurs in small increments over large periods of time. Furthermore, the pay information of fellow workers is typically confidential and unavailable for comparison. Ginsburg argued that pay discrimination is inherently different from adverse actions, such as termination. Adverse actions are obvious, but small pay discrepancy is often difficult to recognize until more than 180 days of the pay change. Ginsburg argued that the broad remedial purpose of the statute was incompatible with the Court's "cramped" interpretation. Her dissent asserted that the employer had been, "Knowingly carrying past pay discrimination forward" during the 180-day charging period, and therefore could be held liable." It is redistribution of wealth to ask Goodyear to pay this woman what men were being paid. The money would have to come from somewhere! And I think it is only fair that the money come from the pockets of the greedy executives who thought they could (and did) get away with paying a woman less.
So back to your blog posting... I really think it's a stretch to link what Obama was saying here, which was obviously in reference to a different era, and what he said to "Joe." We can either be successful by crawling on the backs of those as we pass them on the ladder of life or we can put out a hand on our way up and bring more people to the top. We pay taxes for a multitude of reasons, why shouldn't one of those reasons be to help our fellow man attain a piece of the American dream?
Interesting Jimmy. This was all over Drudge. Nothing new here - not to mention completely out of context. http://apps.wbez.org/blog/?p=639
This is the FULL accounting of what actually was said.
Again, Jimmy - if you insist ...please stop repeating the awful, desperate drivel that the RNC, McCain, and the rest of the right keep spoon-feeding you ....You keep saying you speak for yourself, but your posts fall so close to the actual delivery of the talking points you state you don't pay attention to.....then you don't even bother to find the facts before you state these fabrications as your own opinion? What happened to you?
